From Gravel Lot to Vibrant Climbing Playground
Christian Ringnes generously donated a sculpture valued at NOK 22 million to the town of Svolvær in Vågan Municipality, Lofoten. The sculpture, titled “Eye of the North”, was funded by the C. Ludens Foundation. In addition to this significant gift, Ringnes also contributed a climbing park located in the same park area, Langåsen, where Eye of the North is situated. The Svolvær Culture Park was born.
The climbing park was designed and built by Høyt & Lavt Adventure Concepts and quickly became a favorite play destination for children of all ages. It became so popular that some neighbors even complained about the joyful noise and the large number of children visiting. The park includes various climbing routes with different levels of difficulty, making it appealing even to older children.
The climbing park was established in Langåsen, a city-adjacent park just five minutes from the center of Svolvær. The site was previously a neglected gravel area with decayed and unsafe playground equipment that had not been maintained for years.
The municipality aimed to include multiple climbing routes with varying degrees of difficulty to accommodate both young and older children.
The municipality reported a very positive experience working with Høyt & Lavt Adventure Concepts, describing the collaboration as professional and enjoyable. The climbing park fits beautifully into the landscape, and the entire area has undergone a full upgrade — including new benches and seating areas, providing parents with a place to relax while their children play.
No, there are currently no plans for further development of the site, as all available space has already been utilized.
“We are very happy with the result” Mayor Vågan County
