Berg Elementary School

From grey schoolyard to a destination for play and learning

What Did You Want to Build, and for Whom?

The outdoor areas at Berg School were worn down, with only a few traditional play structures that had not been replaced as they broke. We wanted to completely transform the school grounds and give the children a range of activities suited to their interests. To achieve this, we divided the outdoor area into different zones and built various spaces for play and physical activity — both for the youngest children and for the older ones.

Why Did You Choose a Playground from Høyt & Lavt?

At the edge of the school lies a wooded area that was ideal for building a playground. Since we know Stein Ivar Hovland, the technical manager and park designer at Høyt & Lavt Adventure Concepts, their playgrounds became a natural choice for us. He understood exactly what we wanted — a playground that blended seamlessly with the surrounding nature.

The playground was customized to fit our needs and budget, and the elements we received truly stand out from traditional playgrounds. We now have a full-featured school climbing park with obstacles, nets, ziplines, and treetop huts — something for everyone.

What Was Important During the Building Process?

It was important to us that the playground be visually appealing, adapted to the site, and that the surrounding nature was preserved. During construction, only a few trees were removed, and those were taken down for safety reasons.

What Are You Most Satisfied With?

We’re very happy that the school climbing park includes a variety of elements for different interests and skill levels. From ziplines that offer speed and excitement to treetop huts that serve as meeting points and launching pads for adventure.
Another major benefit is that the climbing park requires minimal maintenance and is built with natural, durable materials. It can also be used all year round, regardless of the weather.

Playground in the forest with wooden towers, suspension bridges, and climbing elements.
An exciting forest playground with treetop towers, suspension bridges, and a large rope obstacle that challenges children’s balance and strength.

What Was the Final Result?

Berg School has undergone a major upgrade and is now actively used for both play and learning. We see the playground being used for recreational activities, competitions, and relaxation. Thanks to its variety, Berg School has become a destination — families travel from far away to use the school grounds during evenings and weekends.

Have There Been Further Developments or Plans?

One great thing about the climbing park is that it can easily be expanded. We already have plans to include a large net stretched between two elements, so children can use it as a unique resting and hangout space.
